Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world and certainly one of the most isolated. It is situated in a wide and flat valley. Although this valley and the city within it are well above 3000m, the mountains encapsulating the valley are sharply craggy, rocky and immense. And yet the Potala on a small hill in the centre of the city still dominates the landscape.

Honestly words can’t describe the objective beauty of this building so I’m not even going to bother trying. The countless images woven in wall hangings and painted on murals surrounded with stylised clouds and bursting rays of sunlight are testiment to that and Frank Llloyd Wright was said to have had a picture of it in his office – the actual feeling I had towards this building were a little bit more akin to guilt and sadness.

My comparisons might be a tad un-pc so I apologise in advance but I probably wouldn’t pay for a Nazi run tour of Buckingham palace or an Al-Qaeda organised museum at ground zero so I felt a little guilty checking my bag in at the entrance to this hollow, lifeless castle knowing that it had been robbed of its dignity by the previous generation of Chinese people. It’s been made something of an awkward spectacle, sitting timidly and ashamedly in the now very un-Tibetan city of Lhasa – being subjected to ticket prices and tour guides (watched closely by spies of course) and gift shops and everything that adorns dead buildings. But it should be alive. It was an awful place and an awful experience.

The worst part is Shol. The sprawling traditional Tibetan village that used to stretch out in front of the Palace. A rock by the four lane road at the foot of the palace describes how in 1995 for the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Tibetan Autonomous Region a grand square was presented to the Tibetan people. The huge space is paved with white stone that burns your eyes when the sun reflects off it, a huge monument to the ‘Liberation of Tibet’ faces the seat of the Dalai lama now – massive and ugly. Right in the centre of the Potala square is a ceremonial platform and a Chinese flag. So high that you can’t even take a picture of the Potala palace from any point on the square without the flag contaminating it.

And Shol? They tore it all down to make way for the square. Thousands of families were relocated to modern buildings at the edges of the city.
